Consumers Say: "In tweets we trust"

According to the second annual Digital Influence Index study, 75% of U.S. consumers are more likely to trust companies that microblog on popular sites like Twitter.com. The study also noted that 90% of consumers use the Internet to either buy, or compare prices on items.

Some 75 percent of people surveyed said they view companies that microblog -- sending short, frequent messages on sites like Twitter or status updates on social networks like Facebook -- as more deserving of their trust than those that do not, according to a survey by Fleishman-Hillard, conducted with market research firm Harris Interactive.

The second annual Digital Influence Index study, released at the Reuters Consumer and Retail Summit in New York, researches the extent to which the Internet affects consumer behavior.

The findings on Twitter are particularly notable in a year where many leading corporations found themselves in crisis mode, from BP's role in the Gulf oil disaster to recalls from Toyota Motor Corp and Johnson & Johnson and a viral campaign against new diapers from Procter & Gamble on Facebook.

"What really matters here I think is that the rules of crisis engagement that we've known for years and years still apply, but they still apply in a much more accelerated way," Dave Senay, Chief Executive of Fleishman-Hillard, told Reuters in a telephone interview.

John Mccain: I Would Never Tax Snooki's Tanning Bed

From CNN.com:

During the ten minute sneak peek of “Jersey Shore” season two, we see the effects the Obama administration has had on our dear friend Snooki’s lifestyle: the girl has been reduced to getting her faux glow with a spray tan.

Among the many revelations Schnickers made within those few minutes – she’s found love with an “amazing gorilla juicehead”; she gets crazy when handed "a bottle of freaking SoCo" – one of them was political.

“I don’t go tanning anymore, because Obama put a 10 percent tax on tanning,” Snooks said after her juicehead sprayed her face with one last coat of self-tanner, just to be on the safe side.

“I feel like he did that intentionally for us. McCain would never put a 10 percent tax on tanning. Because he’s pale and he would probably want to be tan," the pint-sized fist-pumper explained.

McCain confirmed Snooki's assertions in a tweet.

The Arizona Senator wrote, “@Sn00ki, u r right, I would never tax your tanning bed! Pres Obama’s tax/spend policy is quite The Situation but I do recommend wearing sunscreen!" To which Snooks responded: "Haha Yes!"

Is 'Friending' in Your Future? Better Pay Your Taxes First

Most of you have probably heard the warning about putting things on your MySpace, FaceBook, or Twitter profile that you might not want your employers to see. But have you ever thought about not wanting the IRS to know what you put on your profile? Well, you might want think about it next time you post a blog entry about your personal finances. According to the Wall Street Journal, some state revenue agents have begun gathering information about tax evaders from social networking sites.

In Minnesota, authorities were able to levy back taxes on the wages of a long-sought tax evader after he announced on MySpace that he would be returning to his home town to work as a real-estate broker and gave his employer's name. The state collected several thousand dollars, the full amount due.

Meanwhile, agents in Nebraska collected $2,000 from a DJ after he advertised on his MySpace page that he would be working at a big public party.

In California, which has recently been so strapped for revenue it has had to pay some bills with IOUs, agents are also using social Web sites. When one delinquent was identified as a rigger of sails, a curious collection agent searched his name and the term online and found a discussion board used by local riggers. In one thread someone asked where the rigger was because his store had closed, and a reply was posted, "Oh, he moved across the bay." The agent found the man and collected a four-figure sum.
