2009 vs. 1999: Are you Better off?

Earlier this morning I came across an interesting article from MSN Money discussing how the financial situation of most middle class families has not improved over the past decade. When comparing the year 1999 – the peak of the dot-com boom – to the recession of 2008 and 2009 it is easy to understand why so many families feel their finances are worse off now than they were a decade ago.

"This hasn't been a sterling decade," says Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institution and the author of "Creating an Opportunity Society." She argues that the American dream of prosperity and advancement has turned into a myth. "The average American family hasn't been able to improve its financial situation."

Of course, it's impossible to compare 1999 with 2009 without noting that in 1999, the economy was still floating happily in a dot-com bubble, while this year we've been mired in the worst recession since the Great Depression.

But experts say these are just details. They argue that dozens of indicators -- after adjusting for 30% inflation since 1999 -- have been marching in the wrong direction for years, in ways big and small:

In 1999, 67% of workers had to pay part of their health care benefits cost, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008, that had risen to 75%.

According to the Census Bureau, 10.3% of U.S. families lived under the poverty line in 2008, versus 9.3% in 1999.

Households in the bottom 10% made $12,181 or less in 2008, which was down 8.1% from 2000. But the threshold for household incomes in the top 5% was $180,000, down just 0.9% from 2000.

Biden Links Tax on Wealthy to Patriotism

From Boston.com:

Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden acknowledged yesterday the wealthy would pay more taxes if he and Sen. Barack Obama are in the White House, but he put an interesting spin on it.

"It's time to be patriotic… time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut," Biden said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Republican Sen. John McCain pounced on the remark. "Raising taxes in a tough economy isn't patriotic," he said in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. "It's not a badge of honor. It's just dumb policy."

Trying to find the right tone on the Wall Street crisis, McCain also went for the tried and true in a new TV ad yesterday: Warn voters that his Democratic opponent is a tax-and-spend liberal. The ad warns of huge spending increases, pork-barrel projects, and "painful taxes." "Can your family afford that?" the announcer concludes.

Obama's proposals, however, would lower the tax bill for the vast majority of taxpayers, and by letting President Bush's tax cuts lapse would raise income taxes on those earning $250,000 or more a year.

Disgruntled Taxpayer Rams Car into IRS Building

From AccountingWeb.com:

“A 48-year-old resident of Center Point, AL who was apparently upset about his finances, rammed his car into the Birmingham, AL IRS building on Tuesday.

After a phone call with the IRS, in which the man, who has not been named in the press, threatened an IRS agent, the agent called Birmingham police. A Jefferson County sheriff was dispatched to the man's house where he was told by the man's wife that the man had left his house. The wife told authorities that the man was armed.

The wife provided the sheriff with the man's cell phone number. When a dispatcher from the sheriff's office contacted the man on his phone, the man indicated he intended to kill himself.

According to a report in the Birmingham news, the dispatcher tried to calm the man down and asked where he was, but the man said not to worry about where he was. He said he was going to drive himself off a cliff and then everybody would know his location.

The man did not appear to be injured after driving his car into the IRS building, but was taken to Cooper Green Mercy Hospital for evaluation. No one at the IRS office was injured in the crash.

No formal charges have been filed, however Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Henry Irby indicated that the man could face state and federal charges.”
